managing meetings

default-16x9

Hi all

I'm putting together a development programme for Team Leaders and need something around Managing Meetings. I was thinking about giving them some theory and then running a 'mock' meeting and giving them each characters to play. Any other ideas out there?

Thanks in advance

  1. Meeting facilitation
    Hi Sue

I’ve writing this in a meeting facilitation module at the moment. And I’ve delivered this exercise successfully

You’ve got the basic roles like the facilitator, minute taker, ideas person, team worker etc. and you bullet point their characteristics and give them to your delegates

Then brief them to have a meeting on a given subject and make notes yourself on who drops into what role.

During the debrief, discuss with the participants what roles they think they dropped into and why. You’ll find this is more realistic than giving them set characters to play and they can really find their niche in a meeting

Hope this helps, feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss further on info@supremacytraining.com

  2. is this too obvious?
    Hi Sue
Video Arts “Meetings, bloody meetings” and “More bloody meetings”
    Oldies but goodies

With your idea can I suggest that rather than a “mock” meeting get them to run a real meeting…it makes it less of a training room “mock-ery” and more “real-istic”

  3. Suggestions
    Hi Sue,

I recently completed an effective meeting course. I found that using the W.A.S.P formula was quite usefull. And I agree with the fact that have a mock meeting does not have the same affect as a real life one.

  4. Try video Arts
There is a good video arts film called Talking To The Team starring Hugh Laurie. It takes people through the wrong way (and then the right way) to run team meetings.

  5. What type of meetings?
    Hi Sue,
There a number of ways of running meetings. What type of meeting is best for your team leaders? Are they passing on info? asking for response? reviewing performance? How formal/informal do they need it? Do they wish to involve team memebers in running meeting? I like action meetings for effectiveness and focus.

As regards a “mock” meeting. I have trained others to run meetings by letting the delegates choose a work topic, for example car parking or something similarly contentious. The delegates are themsleves but the trainer can help create situations by being part of the meeting.
Not only does it link to workplace but often results in action points that are followed up after the session in the workplace.

Please feel free to contact me if you want to talk it through.

    Good luck

  6. Types of meetings
    Hi Peter

Thanks for your response. The team leaders run daily meetings lasting up to half an hour. It is mostly download, and then they ask for questions. The feedback from staff is that although they ask for questions, time is always at a premium and they feel that they shouldn’t ask. There are also the usual one or two in each team who ‘hog’ the floor.

I would like to chat this through. Could you let me have your phone number through my profile and I’ll call you

    Thanks
