I am currently re-vamping our sickness absence procedure. As part of the procedure I would like to involve Return to Work Interviews. If anyone has any documentation that they could send me about their own Company procedure I would be very grateful.

Sickness Policy
We have recently revamped our absence policy which you are welcome to but it has not got much about return to work interviews.

Back to work
Your use of return to work interviews will need to depend on the nature of the absence. There is not a one size fits all situation in employee absence.
Many training materials do not cover all aspects of the management approach required to comply with the multi faceted legal aspects.
The current employment legislation indicates that reparation into the workplace after lengthy absence is crucial. Many a stress at work claim could have been avoided by better return to work procedures.
The employee is entitled to fair and consistently applied policy concerning staff absence. Such policy needs to factor in legal requirements such as parenting and care leave as well as for a number of other personal reasons. If a member of staff is taking leave on a regular basis the underlying reason needs to be thoroughly investigated as this could be caused by stress, bullying, or a variety of other factors which expose the employer to potential claims if not fully investigated and the results documented.
The use of medical reports for fitness of the job at the commencement of employment and following sick absence is a useful tool. A lengthy discussion with action points and clarity of where the return interview is placed in the disciplinary chain is also required.
If you want to chat this through please phone me. I am happy to discuss this in more detail.

Absence Mgt
We try to take a positive proactive stance concerning the subject of sickness absence – our policy is called “Maximising Attendance” and details what the business expects of the employee, as well as what support is provided in the event of major illness/incapacity.
Return to work interviews are just one part of the overall process and are positioned as a positive meeting to discuss whatever has been causing non-attendance, understand the causes and action plan a full return to work (wherever possible).
For training purposes, I have found the Fenman package extremely useful as it assists with the structure of the return to work interview.
