It's not an unusual question, I think, but I have just started as a trainer and I would like to know what is the best way of getting work.
I have tried a few things, such as actually going into an array of private companies on industrial estates to present my portfolio. So far I have had one potential client, so it has not been a complete waste of time.
Are there places I can go or write to about tenderings?
What techniques do others use to get work?
I have been a teacher for the last 12 years and a head of Department for 4 years, so I have training and management skills. I think I have a lot to offer, but I am not quite sure what the best way forward is.
I would be really grateful for any advice and help that others can offer.

join the club -congrats for making the break
I am in the same position, leaving primary ed at end of summer term after 18 years. It’s hard but no regrets at all so far. Work so far has been writing and delivering seminars for a supply agency, acting as a consultant to a community play scheme, writing, delivering and assessing on the Higher Level TA programme and the odd day at a HE college on Childcare courses. Have just kept head above water. Lots of time taken up with making supply £s equivalent and this takes me away from marketing myself for higher paid work – my business objective is to make as much £ part time as I was earning full time! Please email me and perhaps I can help more – sharing ideas is good. It can be quite isolated starting out.

You need to start doing lots of networking to raise your profile and tell everyone what you can do including family and friends – you never know who they may talk to. Go to your local Chamber and see how they can help you. Attend business breakfasts in your area and take lots of business cards and talk to lots of people – usually advertised in business pages of local papers. Put your details on the training directories on the internet. Get a website promoting what you do. Join Magenta Circle and Ecademy web-based networking groups.

* Try and get to some networking events,
* Join networking groups and use sites such as Training Zone to get you name out and about,
* Keep in touch with any contacts you make, you never know when they may come in handy,

I think you have to do some background on potential clients and work out where you and they jigsaw together for their benefit.It is hard when you first start but one contact leads to another. Take heart and persevere. A no today may be a yes in 6 months time! Networking is useful too contact you local Business Link for details of events near you.
