I'm not sure whether I want to do any studying at the moment, at least not until I discover those areas that I need to develop so am not sure about CIPD. I am an education consultant but work in a range of settings doing a range of jobs from supporting community play scheme staff to writing seminars for supply teachers to delivering workshops for teachers to help them work with children with behaviour problems. I remain a member of the NAHT (Head Teachers professional body) but feel I need to access other support and "become part of the wider world"! Does that ring a bell with anyone? ICPD costs less and does not involve study initially. Any advice out there?

Which professional body
I am a member of both and they are very different. You can join CIPD as an associate and would not have to study (unless you wanted a higher level of membership). This would give you access to their local networks and other resources.
For InstCPD, which have just re-launched themselves, you need to do 50% more CPD than your current institute requires. It is an up-and-coming institute but may not yet give you the access to the wider world you are after. It is only fractionally cheaper and remember you can claim your annual CIPD fees back against tax. If you are freelance you can probably claim your initial joining fee too, but get your accountant to check that.
Based on your role you might wish to consider SEAL (www.seal.org.uk). It is relatively cheap and is great for teachers as well as trainers.
Hope this helps

ITOL is the option
Jane,
Have you considered the Institute of Training & Organisational Learning, I think you will find this to be far more beneficial to your needs. Take a look at the website http://www.itol.co.uk or EMail the admin team for more information admin@itol.co.uk.
