Book recommendations – ‘team building’ and ‘difficult people’

default-16x9

Hi
I have just been asked by a client what books I'd recommend for 'team building and handling difficult people'.

I'm first of all going to try to get her to re-think 'difficult people' into people who may be behaving differently to what you'd expect or is helpful right now'.

I've got some books that I'll suggest but as always there's probably lots of other new and old favourites of yours that may be of value too.

What would you recommend?

Warm regards,

Stella Collins

  1. “Shackleton’s Way”

    Hi Stella

Though this book is predominantly aimed as a "leadership" book there is a lot of sense in recognising that leadership requires both teambuilding and dealing with people where there may be conflict.

This book is a cracking read and links Shackleton (early 20 century, ice snow, near starvation, isolation, herioc optimism etc) to more modern situations through case studies and present day leader managers.  Shackleton had numerous occasions where his teambuilding, teamworking and peacemaking skills were tested to the limit, it is also fair to say that he had some "difficult people" to deal with, both inside and outside his team.

    I hope this helps

  2. Resource suggestions

    Hi Stella

Try Crucial Conversations by Kerry Patterson et al.  It is fantastic book on everyday conversation examples including handling difficult situations.

For team bulilding try How to Lead by Jo Owen which covers leadership and how teams should function.

For training resources on both of these topics try these training materials.

    Hope this helps

  3. I really like book summaries

If only we had the time to read all we feel we should…for that reason I find book summaries a great way to update and as a resource for clients and people I work with.

Have a look on my website http://www.andrewgibbons.co.uk for 28 of these – on and around the topics you mention.

    Happy reading!

  4. Changing Vampires into Angels

    Hi Stella,

‘Changing Vampires into Angels’ (Maria Paviour) looks at handling ‘difficult’ people – by changing our own responses rather than seeking to change other peoples.

It’s a really interesting look at relationships and how we communicate, and is full of practical action to take and goal setting with each chapter.

It’s available on amazon here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Changing-Vampires-into-Angels-Relationships/dp/0954365402/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1259148589&sr=1-2

    Hope this is useful

  5. Books to handle difficult people

  6. Some suggestions

    Hi Stella,

I was recommended to read ‘How to Work with Just About Anyone: A 3-Step Solution for Getting Difficult People to Change’ by Lucy Gill. I haven’t read it yet, but seems interesting…

I also suggest ‘The Five Dysfunctions of a Team’ by Patrick Lencioni.

    Good luck!
