I have been asked to give a workshop to a group of middle ranking executives on the topic of influencing others to achieve change laterally. How can you lead change with people in other parts of the organisation who are in different functional groups? How do you lead when you do not have formal power? Any suggestions for reading and exercises?

you have two subjects…
Dear P
you have two subjects here;
Change and
Influencing
As regards the Influencing I’d strongly recommend you have a look at the "three Greeks" approach…..it is very powerful for influence where you have no formal power and I have used it to great effect with middle managers who generally find it adequately intellectual but sufficiently pragmatic.
I wrote a workbook for an generic Influencing skills programme which could be amended to suit your needs…..if you want to PM me we could have an offline chat. Your call!

(PS with regard to Change there is a topic on peoplealchemy which relates expressly to "Communicating Change"; this is worthwhile reading for you in this instance as it relates to peoples’ responses to change commuication or the lack of it, as well as making recommendations to ensure the responses are good. I wrote it!)
Who Killed The Baroness?
Hi P
If budget and time will allow I recommend setting aside a few hours for Victor Botterill
