I imagine you have looked at the annual Sunday Times "Best Companies" to work for in the large,medium and small sectors.One of their crieterion revolves around your headline question.Betty’s Teashops,I believe, as an example, subscribe to some local community groups and charities. The examples in the last Sunday Times report were legion as I recall. They rate the criterion on feedback from staff under the heading "How much companies are thought by their staff to put back into society in general and the local community in particular" Link:- http://features.thesundaytimes.co.uk/best100companies/ You should lots of short case studies from the various narratives.Previous reports are archived.

We have recently been telling the Big Society about our new albeit modest step in this direction.We have decided to attempt something which might be of interest to you. Our owner is a volunteer when he is not working for us! Based on this experience we have just created a new group on "link in" and more widely through our monthly newsletter to public and private sector clients. The group is headed:-

Volunteers – Workers and Employers Who Support Them!

Under this broad headline we are:-

Providing free training to volunteers – and asking our clients to do so!
Creating a new portfolio of free short courses for our clients about active citizenship and working well with volunteers
Facilitating between client members an equality exchange of free resources, new ideas, opportunities and good practice with volunteers
Sending out a free monthly newsletter to clients and volunteers
Now exploring a way of taking on volunteers and helping to create a bridge to either the world of work and/or education and training

I work for a Housing Association with a strong CSR / volunteering ethos. We work as part of the ‘Cares’ Network within Business in the Community. This service offers volunteering opportunities and is effectively a brokerage.
