Transactional Analysis

default-16x9

 Hi there

I am facilitating a workshop which covers TA and specfically the PAC relationships. Does anyone have an activity that would work with a group (about 10 people) to explore how this relates to their business? The client wants me to get the group to consider how they work with their teams and the impact of this on the company.

Many thanks

  1. Questionnaire?

I have a questionnaire that you could potentialy use to begin exploring ego types and their implications. PM on

  2. Applying TA to real examples

    Sue

I like to ask people to come up with some real life (but anonymous) examples of cross conversations, and get the individual to use or describe the exact wording, tone and behaviours, or get as close as they can. I then pick one or two of the best examples and get the group to try and identify what is happening in PAC terms. This is just what Berne did with his clients. I sometimes speculate about alternatives if I think that will help but mostly people get the idea pretty quickly.

    Hope that helps. Good luck.

  3. if you want an activity….

I have given the group a task to fulfil with a nominated leader…..the group don’t know it but I had given a number of people a secret request to behave in a particular way,  I asked one delegate to behave like a child throughout, one to treat everyone with respect and reason and another to treat all the people who appeared younger than her like children and all those who appeared older than her with extreme deference.

We videoed the activity and then played it back afterwards….it was a bit of a high risk strategy but it worked very well and produced all the required behaviours and reactions, especially when we asked people about their inner dialogue and attitude as well as their visible behaviours

Sounds like a great idea – I just need to work out if I could do this bearing in mind time and the group? Like it.

    Thanks

  5. Questionnaire

  7. Video clip analysis

using video clips seems to work quite well for this type of topic as its about understanding human behaviour.

I  have found that when i have covered PAC theory the delegates get a greater understanding when asked to watch some short video clips and analyse someone elses behaviour.

These can be DIY clips with some scenarios but i have used the odd Youtube clip in the past from shows like Big Brother (very easy to identify PAC conversations going on in the BB house and in particular crossed transactions), Falty Towers (Basil being the rebellious child and his wife playing the part of controlling parent one minute with him and the nurturing parent the next with a hotel guest), and finally ‘The Office’ is littered with them. Warning: be careful on copyright issues though.
