We all know that what people do in their spare time can have a dramatic impact on employee performance, especially in a positive manner. As a result many companies have schemes to encourage community engagement by their staff in various ways.
For example, the father of a colleague of mine was a part of the Scout movement for over 70 years and his employer put him forward for a 'gong' in the New Year's Honours list. This showed a significant amount of respect for him by his employer, and how much that experience had supported the work he did for them as a company.
What do your companies do to recognise outstanding community or charitable work on behalf of their employees?
We have recently sponsored people into membership of the Order of St Edward, a group specifically focussed on recognising people with a strong record of charitable or community engagement - with the added advantage that it is not counted as earnings or benefits under the Income Tax (Earnings and Pensions) Act 2003. After all the last thing we want to do is 'reward' people with a tax bill :-)

where does one find information on the order?
All I can find is the garter order…..or do you actually mean that you have been getting your staff knighthoods!;-)
I love the idea of the guy's employer putting him up for the gong, rather than saying that he is a scout so it is up to the scouting movement to put him up.

Info etc
the Garter order is one of the gong orders but there are several others, including some that date back prior to the merit orders. The interesting thing in the example I wquoted is that the scouts didnt do it – it was the employer who recognised it!
