Getting started as trainer

default-16x9

Hello everyone

This might sound as silly question but here goes

I am currently working as Learning Support Assistant in a college in London. I want to progress into teaching and also into training, not sure how to do the latter. I dont have any experience in delivering training or designing materials-at least not yet. I am thinking about doing a diploma in teaching (further education), would that be useful qualification in training industy? Would I have a chance to find any sort of positions within training capacity at the moment wihtout any specific qualifications?

Thanks

Annika

  1. Assessing

    Hi Annika

My suggestion would be to get an Assessor qualification and work for a Training Provider as an Apprentice Coordinator / Assessor. (This should be connected to something you are already experienced in)

This way you will be earning while you learn and from Assessing it's very easy to add on qualifications as you need them and even do teaching / training qualifications around your work.

Having a training qualification without experience will not make it easy for you to get a job.

    Good luck

  2. shadow and observe

Is there a possibility of sitting in on a few sessions and seeing how your colleagues, that deliver training at your College, do it? They may work with you to get you delivering some of the content to give you a favour of what you can expect when you are in front of a group.

That’s really how I started out.

  3. Becoming a trainer

I would suggest discussing with the training team and start delivering a section of the college's induction programme (after periods of watching it being delivered by the normal trainer). This will give you a feel for training with relatively easy content. It also gives you relevant experience on your cv.

I would consider the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development qualifications e.g. the training certificate course. I am sure you can do the course part time whilst carrying on with your day job.

Best of luck with your career
