I produce training resources for the voluntary sector - mostly to train volunteers in-house. I want to develop some of the training resources into e-learning that volunteers can carry out at their own pace. I have looked for e-learning software and am overwhelmed by the choice. Has anyone used any of this type of software? I'd appreciate some feedback - good and back. Thank you

You're quite right, there are a whole host of elearning software out there which you can use to develop elearning courses. Lots of choices and options.
Which one you choose very much depends on a number of factors. For example, what subject matter are you looking to deliver for your elearning? Some software is better suited to delivering systems training; others are better for scenario based designs, and others better for using animations. What’s your budget for the software? Which device do you want your learners to be able to access the learning from (i.e. PC, tablet, mobile – all three).
Most software will offer a trial download for a certain period of time. I suggest you pick a short topic you want to convert into elearning and develop it using the trial version of 2-3 software …have a play. This way you’ll be able to compare software, find out which one you find the easiest to use and which most importantly, which one delivers your training most effectively.

I second Pam's response. There are loads of tools out there and the truth is there is no one best tool. It depends on what you want to do. In addtion to what Pam said i think you also need to clarify what you mean by e-learning before you choose any tool. Are you just having slides with audio narration that the learners can read through? Will it involve video? Or do you need the e-learning to be interactive? All these need to be considered. A free tool that I can recommend which you can at least start with is Udutu.
Udutu is a free hosted online content editor that will allow you to create basic e-learning courses. Although you will need to pay if you want to host the designed course with them. Otherwise you can export the course into any SCORM compliant Learning Management System for free.
