I'd like to learn more about e-learning design....ideally to a point where ultimately I can produce e-learning myself.
Can anyone direct me to a source of (free) e-learning that might fit the bill?

One of the issues is that it's very platform specific – the ELN is a good place to start to check the lay of the land. Lynda will give offer some good fundamental design tips. The Articulate and LP site will show you a couple of alternative platform options.
