Beginning a career in L & D

default-16x9

Hi all,

I am currently Head of Training for a small, growing IT company. Essentially we are delivering training on the use of our software, to schools.

I love my job and finally feel that I have found my vocation. As such I am looking into building a career in training/ development.  Through a previous role as HR Coordinator I feel like L&D may bring greater reward than just the training aspect, so I would welcome any advice regarding qualifications/ routes which would allow me to progress in this area.

From what I have read so far it looks as though a CIPD level 3 in L&D would be a solid, industry-recognised qualification which would allow access to roles in this arena, but it seems as though you need to be in an L&D role to complete the evidencing aspect of the qualification. We are considering a move to New Zealand a little further down the line, which may factor in to this.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bruce.

  1. hello

    Bruce,

I am a little confused (which may just be me) but as Head of Training are you not already in an L&D role which you would use to complete the CIPD coursework needed for the qualification?

I completed a similar CIPD course a few years ago and found that it did help set a good knowledge foundation in L&D and consolidate my existing knowledge, so I would definitely recommend this. As well as the course, you will gain access to a lot of CIPD documents and literature which will support your career development.  I would also suggest that you give the CIPD a call to discuss the course and what requirements are needed to get the most out of it.

  2. Thanks

    Hi Scott,

This would seem logical, I agree. I was under the impression that to complete the coursework it was necessary to be working in a role more involved with professional development, but through your answer, and a response from Open University, it seems that this is not the case.

Thanks for the advice. It's good to hear that the course was of such benefit. I will contact the CIPD to discuss in more detail.

  3. TAP Qualifications

    Hi Scott.

If I'm not too late to the party here. I took a CIPD qual 21 years ago, but also took the more skills-based practical TAP qualifications. Feel free to take a look at tap-training
