Challenges of leading virtual / remote teams

default-16x9

Hello all,

I'm putting together a session for virtual or remote managers and want to include some discussion/scenarios around the topic of "What challenges do managers of virtual / remote teams experience that a local manager doesnt encounter" - What in your opinion are those challenges? All input appreciated.

Thank you!

we have a whole host of traditional managers who have recently moved to managing remotely. The big issues haven’t been logistics but behavioural. The first is trusting their people to be doing the right things. Many of them talked about feeling comfortable when they could ‘keep an eye’ on the team and uncomfortable when they couldn’t. Trust was a big issue that managers needed to develop.
People also needed to get used to new and emerging technology to stay connected i.e. Skype and other new tools in order to ensure the team felt like a team. This wasn’t easy for people who worked in a very traditional way with traditional values. Not only did they need education about the tools but support in order to adopt new and different behaviours.
