An interesting debate took place via twitter yesterday as to the value of training as a strategic tool. Some proponents were saying that training is only tactical and limited impact on strategy. My view is that if the training needs are linked via SWOT analysis that was undertaken as part of the business planning process, training activity can indeed be strategic - but training as a whole cycle intervention - not an isolated one. I believe that training has lost its strategic importance in many organisations due to this lack of integration with strategy - and if as a profession we want to be taken more seriously we need to align ourselves to the business plan and its needs.
