Why self development skills are so important for SMEs

default-16x9

It is all too easy to forget about your self development skills when you are setting up your business. Sure, you need to work hard; every second of the day is poured into getting your business off the ground. There are people to meet, emails to send, products and services to develop, things to read and phones to answer (even if they are from telephone companies trying to sell you stuff!).

What is an effective small business?

One thing that is equally important in those early days of setting up your business, is getting the support, training and guidance you need to tackle the grey areas of knowledge you might have to ensure you run an effective small business.  I say might, but lets face it, all of us have a blind spot. It might be we have passion in abundance, but we aren’t so confident with open communication (networking) or selling skills. Perhaps we have these things sorted, but time management techniques? Well lets just say that even 40 hours in a day would still see us running late. Its okay, there is no shame in this, it is allowed, we are human after all and of course there are time management tools that can help us all.

Tip: Always invest 10% of your earning on self development. It will be the best investment you ever make

The mistakes we made when setting up our small business

When we first started our business, we took the time in those early days to make some really good mistakes…. and then we decided we had better get the help and advice we needed. We took time out of our busy schedules to make sure we dedicated time ensure we advanced our self development skills.  Without that time in the early days, I’m not so sure we would be where we are now.

Tip: Make the time you need to develop your own learning, so you can grow your business. It is one of the best investments you will make
