I have been self employed for about 8 months and have kept a basic excel spreadsheet for my accounts.
Does anyone know of a software package for self employed

Quickbooks Pro is good as well as SAGE but you need to look at what you want from it as dependant upon VAT registration, invoice generation and payroll you may look at a number of packages. Also if you are going to submit your accounts and tax return in via an accountant then whichever system provides the information they need in the format they are most used to seeing will reduce your bills to them if followed in any purchased accounts software.

Accounts
Hi Ray,
you should talk to your accountant (if you haven’y got one, I strongly recommend that you get one).
Your accountant will have their own systems and if your chosen package interfaces with theirs it will save them time and you money.

Sage
My initial thought is what are you trying to achieve in your accounts. If it is for taxation purposes excel is as good as any. If you need to structure and organise your accounts then sage is a good bet.
I train sage and can upon email request send you sites where manuals can be purhcased. Please note I make no money nor can from promoting these sites.

QB is OK
Hi Ray
I’ve been using the German version of Quickbooks Pro for the last 5 years (in itrs various versions….) The review in PC Answers of (I think) January gave QB the “best” rating, but warned that it might be juust a tad complicated.
I agree with the other respondents — check out with your accountant/finance advisor for what will interface with them, whilst not making your life tooo complex!
Cheers
Dave
