I have a development programme for first line managers (basic supervisory skills, communications skills, conflict handling, basic problem solving etc) over the next 4 months with a manufacturing client. My client has asked me if the programme can be 'accredited'. Is there any way to do this that is not convoluted, bureaucratic or complex? I have managed one programme like this that was aligned with DFES but that was so prescriptive the response of the delegates was very negative!

try the ILM
Hi Jonathan
I found that the ILM were really helpful…and there are benefits for the delegates as well.

accreditation
As Rus says the ILM are good for this BUT the course needs to have been through ‘checking’ before the programme starts!
CMI Accreditation
We are in the process of developing our senior management team and have chosen the CMI (Chartered Management Institute) accredication route.
They also offer a Level 3 programme that has been designed for the level you described. They are very helpful on the phone if you would like to find out more. Also all their course outlines and objectives are online.
ILM or CMI?
Hi Zsuzsanna
Both the ILM & the CMI offer level 3, 4 &5 in management.
If the company is international then the ILM (IMHO) has the edge as the ILM is part of City & Guilds and C&G is known around the world.
The only way to select the right one for a given organisation is to look at the admin structure and requirements and choose the best fit.
Any external accreditation is better than none.

Re: ILM or CMI
Just to re-iterate Mike M. here.
What ever organisation you choose, ILM or CMI, you need to have had the programme checked and accredited BEFORE you start running it.
Give yourself enough time to do this, especially if the programme is going to be more innovative in delivery and content than the old fashioned transactional chalk and talk approach.
I spent the best part of 6 months in a previous role getting a level 4 programmes through the CMI process due to it being outside the normal operating parameters. They are happy to work with you – but they do need some careful management and the right EV often helps!

A different option?
Another option is to get the programme ‘recognised’ by ILM. This is relatively easy to do and may mean no changes to your programme at all.
This means participants join ILM and get their certificates from ILM but it does not count as a qualification as such. You can do this even if the programme has already started.
Already started?
Derek says “…This means participants join ILM and get their certificates from ILM but it does not count as a qualification as such. You can do this even if the programme has already started.”
Derek – while the ILM WILL do this for Development awards and some Endorsed awards – they do not like it and do not encourage it, especially with new centres.
One way ‘around’ this is to registered a course which is mostly about putting learning into action and have this development award recognised and run this AFTER the course to act as a transfer of learning – this at least then is in the spirit of the recognition.

The ILM replies
I asked the ILM for an answer to this question, and here is the reply:
ILM is the largest leadership and management awarding body and it specialises in supervisory/first line management qualifications.
The programme you have described would fit the structure of an ILM Level 3 Award, Certificate or Diploma (they are different sized versions, each building on the previous) very well.
All ILM qualifications are unitised and on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (we are the first) which means that you have great flexibility in design and allowing learners to have credit recognised for their achievement.
Units are relatively small, so you can build up the programme you want to offer from the menu of options available.
If you are interested, go to our website (http://www.i-l-m.com/learn-with-ilm/1041.aspx) for more details. You can become an ILM centre yourself, just follow this link http://www.i-l-m.com/partner-with-ilm/359.aspx
I hope this helps, and apologies for the delay caused by holiday season.
Kind regards
