~~~~ From the editor: DYNAMIC EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING ~~~~~
You may have noticed that the title for this ezine has recently
grown a bit to include the words 'dynamic experiential learning'.
This is mainly an effort to make the title more self-explanatory
when people find it listed in an ezine directory. It may not trip
off the tongue! But it does include relevant 'keywords'.
The revised title also creates an opportunity to look at what's
'dynamic' about the learning processes described in this ezine.
It's not simply about using 'activity' in reviewing. Over the
next few issues you will discover more about the 'ways' and
'whys' of keeping the learning process alive and dynamic.
You are also welcome to contribute to this process - with tips,
links, ideas, feedback etc. to: [email protected]
Your responses to the reader survey were very encouraging (see
next) and make a great start to the New Year. Here's wishing you
a wonderful 1999, but don't forget to replay your highlights of
1998!
~~~~ Feedback: READERS' VIEWS + NEW IDEAS ~~~~~
* Congratulations to Gary Monkman (Winnipeg) for winning a copy
of Playback (the odds were 1:10)
* The quality of replies received was excellent - thank you.
* Feedback was encouraging, helpful and balanced - with some
great ideas (see1 below)
* The focus will remain on both the HOW and WHY of ACTIVE
REVIEWING.
* There will be many more tips and links (to the 'Active
Reviewing' site and other sites) in future issues.
* Concrete examples (of real events in reviewing) will appear
now and again (see 2 below)
* The 'international dimensions' of reviewing (and this
ezine) will be recognised and developed (see 3 below)
1) NEW IDEAS + INTERACTION
* Thanks for the inspirational ideas (but some involve too much
time and hard work!). Once the list has grown to a few hundred I
hope to launch a more open/interactive list in parallel to this
one - to bring in a wider range of contributors and even guest
editors! Meanwhile, contributions are always welcome within the
current 'newsletter' format. Just write to: [email protected]
2) CONCRETE EXAMPLES
* The focus of the newsletter is both narrow (active reviewing)
and broad (in almost any context). This means that any one
example may only apply directly to a small minority of readers.
For example(!) reviewing canoeing with young people at risk may
not readily 'connect' with a reader who is doing 'reminiscence'
work with senior citizens, or with another reader who is
facilitating an action learning set with senior managers. All
these people do active reviewing - and are on this list!
* It will be difficult to find examples that speak directly to
all readers. But I will use more examples (and examples from
readers will always be welcome!)
3) THE INTERNATIONAL DIMENSION
* Given that 'reviewing' is not a universal term, alternative
terms will be listed at the top of each issue - to help overcome
any language/jargon barriers. These two lines will probably do
the job:
REVIEWING = PROCESSING = REFLECTION = DEBRIEFING
(The preferred term varies from one country to another.)
* Given that there are different 'reviewing' traditions in
different cultures and countries, I will provide and encourage
contributions about reviewing in different learning cultures.

HIGH TECH vs. LOW TECH
Reviewing can be 'high tech', 'low tech' or 'no tech'. 'Low' or
'no' technology methods often provide the best opportunities for
reviewing - especially when they are simple, straightforward,
versatile and adaptable. Nice to know if you have limited
resources!

NEW SEARCH TOOL
Reviewing is about making experience accessible and usable. So
there are now multiple ways of accessing the 'Guide to Active
Reviewing'! The latest addition is a search box on the front page
from which you can find ANY word on the site. The other six
search methods are also accessible from the home page. Hopefully
there is a method to match every searching style?
