Age Diversity in Employment

default-16x9

"From the DfEE website:-

LAST YEAR THE GOVERNMENT PUBLISHED A REPORT ON ITS CONSULTATION ABOUT EMPLOYMENT AND AGE DISCRIMINATION. THE REPORT “ACTION ON AGE” SIGNALLED THE GOVERNMENT’S OPPOSITION TO AGE DISCRIMINATION IN EMPLOYMENT. IT IS WASTEFUL FOR BRITAIN, FOR BUSINESSES AND FOR INDIVIDUALS ALIKE.

A key finding of the consultation was the need to change outmoded attitudes and practices that are a factor in age discrimination in employment. It became clear that a non-statutory Code of Practice would be a valuable tool for achieving this. After the publication of the report, we began working with some key employer and employee representative groups and interest groups to develop a draft Code. Subsequently, we issued the draft for wider consultation and comment. Copies of the draft document went to businesses, Trades Unions, organisations representing older people and individuals.

The responses to the wider consultation suggested that the standards in the draft Code were right, but that further guidance was needed. I am pleased to say that we have now produced the guidance asked for, illustrated with case studies, on how to address the issue of age in the workplace. I believe this will help employers ensure they are not discriminating on age."
