Awareness of cultural diffrences in appraisals

default-16x9

I will be carrying out a series of workshops covering appraisal skills and want to include a section on appraising staff from a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds. As such, I'd really appreciate advice on what differences to be aware of when carrying out appraisals in a culturally diverse, local authority staff group.

There’s a lot of work done around cultural difference, based on national culture. Religious differences in appraisal terms tend to stem from national cultures rather than actual religious doctrine so don’t get too hung up on that.

Geert Hofstede devised a framework for assessing culture – Google can help! We’ve found it useful when looking at performance reviews particularly with large numbers of expats.

The key things to look out for are how people assess themselves and others. There are major differences with some groups always rating people with higher paygrades highly regardless of evidence.

We work with people in a relaxed way, using a couple of profiling techniques so they understand their own natuaral bias first before having fun with a gaming approach to understanding others.

You may also need to think about the process, as even with training and understanding you may have to add some balancing elements before you can fairly compare PM data across cultures.

We worked on a global 360 process and the results were fascinating, it really helped the business to challenge itself not only on PM but on how it communicated with and engaged employees and clients.

Thank you for your comments. I’ll take a look at your sites today. For now, I’m simply hoping for some pointers on where to read up, at a high level, and include in a 5-minute segment of a workshop to raise awareness of the subject.
