A push to make Brits appreciate the importance of learning a foreign language is set to take place this autumn.
CILT, the National Centre for Languages plans to use Europe Day, in September, to launch the European Day of Languages campaign 2004.
The centre hopes to explode myths that everyone speaks English and that foriegn languages have few employment prospects beyond teaching, translating and interpreting.
It is hoped that more people than ever before will take part, by organising events and awareness-raising activities.
‘We are encouraging people to mark the day in their own contexts, whether in press and media, schools and workplaces or local Government’, said Peter Boaks, Acting Director.
More information is available on the CILT website.
