I am trying to put some materials together as part of training for staff involved in providing psychological support following a major incident. Does anyone know of any materials/resources on the subject of 'Breaking Bad News'? I am looking to compile an 'input' on this subject timing would be approximately 40 minutes. Any suggestions or guidance on where to find this type of material would be much appreciated.

how bad is bad?
Hi Anne Marie
Sorry to appear nit-picky but is the intervention for people who have to JUST break bad news, or is it for staff who will be “providing psychological support”.
In my career I have had to break bad news to people as part of my job and I was trained to do this….but I sure as hell wouldn’t think it qualified me to provide psychological support!
🙂
Sorry, that probably doesn’t help

Clarification – I hope…!
Hi Russell
Essentially, I am looking for materials on effective ways to support people immediately following their receiving ‘bad news’ in relation to providing psychological support. Any info on effective/supportive ways to ‘break bad news’ would also be helpful as reference information. Not sure if this clarifys what I’m asking or not?? Sorry!

Hi Ann Marie
You might like to try the training department of your local NHS Trust. Most trust’s now run a Breaking Bad News course aimed at medical start, so they could have some valuable info for you.
