There’s plenty of choice. Some charge; others are free. Some are periodically slow; others are consistently fast. Some have knowledgeable helpline staff; others don’t.
I’m prompted to put up this page as a forum for questions and answers on the subject after my experiences recently. I’ve been a loyal Demon customer for several years, but - as every Demon customer recently experienced - their mail servers have been giving horrendous problems. Also, one in four of my connections to Demon fail to negotiate the PPP connection. Now I know that as a Mac user, some server software encounters problems - and many helpline staff just don’t know - but this was one problem too far. I also use ISDN, and Demon have sorted out 64k ISDN but don’t yet offer 128k ISDN. So, it’s time to change.
I’ve gone to BT Internet for a month. Same price (£10 plus VAT). 56k, 64k and 128k access. Dedicated ISDN support. Dedicated Mac support. One huge advantage - they’re providing a free 0800 access number from midnight Friday to midnight Sunday at both 56k and 64k access speeds.
BT Internet had a terrible reputation, but a lot seems to have changed.
