Drugs/Alcohol at Work

default-16x9

I suspect that an employee is using drugs at work. They are acting very irrationally and their work is declining. They have frequent periods of poor timekeeping and absence. When the manager is not around this gets worse. Today in particular, they were acting very strangely, appearing very vacant and slurring their words. Their colleagues and employees in other departments are now complaining about the employee's performance and absence from the workplace. Perhaps coincidentally, there have also been reports of dubious smoking happening in the toilets. They have suffered a lot of stress in their personal life recently and as far as we are aware, they are not taking any medication. Has anyone had any similar expereinces and how have they handled the situation?

  1. Experience of one case
One of my team was behaving as you describe, due to being under the influence of drugs at work, although as far as we knew she wasn’t actually taking drugs whilst at work. She was interviewed by the head of department and director of human resources, given a written warning, and referred for an occupational health medical. This happened about 12 years ago and I can’t remember all the fine details, but her behaviour and health didn’t improve and she was eventually dismissed due to serious misconduct. The disciplinary procedure had provision for dealing with being unfit for work due to alcohol and/or drugs. The medical route failed in this case as it depends on the person accepting that they have an illness and wanting to be treated for their illness, but this person was in denial and self-destruct mode.
