How useful is e-learning for developing teams? Any limitations to bear in mind, or tips to follow?

E-elarning or just on line bonding?
Not sure about e-learning having much to do with teams. Teams can however be created virtually and function well, with relationships and common ground and some socialisation through internet solely. This is internet team activity not learning per se.
E-learning in groups on line seems to just provide a degree of ‘we are all here for the same purpose’ as most sessions are structured for trainer student interaction rather than student to student.
What sort of team e-learning did you have in mind?

Probably only as a support mechanism.
I’ve not come across e-learning being used for team building before. I’m assuming you are refering to the use of LMS-type facilities such as chat or team rooms etc to promote communication and a sense of belonging to a community?
My thought is that it could be useful to supplement other team building initiatives, but really only for disparate, remote or really large teams.
In any case, I think you would have to be careful how you managed or facilitated such an exercise to avoid it getting oput of hand (though I suspect the challenge would be more one of getting people to subscribe to such an exercise and medium in the first place).
Psychometrics
You could certainly use psychometric and personality questionaire facilities online as preparation for a team development event or similar.
I believe you will find that many suppliers offer online options when completing their questionnaires – Belbin, Myers Briggs Type Indicator are a couple that I have found useful in developing teams.
Or maybe some sort of online case study or ‘game’.
Hope this helps ?
