E-learning for On Job Trainers

default-16x9

We are introducing skills matrices, backed up by standard operating procedures, across the most common jobs in our 200+ retail/distribution outlets. To ensure consistent standards, we need to train a trainer in each role at each site, so that they can train others. It is not feasible (in terms of time or cost) to release all of these future trainers to attend formal training courses.

Can anyone recommend an on line course, which is aimed at operator level employees, that teaches the fundamentals of on job coaching?

As many people will testify, I am a great believer in the benefits of e-Learning. Nevertheless I am also a realist.

A well-designed on-line course could certainly bring your operator level employees up to speed with the theory and principles underlying on-job coaching.

What this would not do is model good behaviour very realistically or afford the opportunity for genuine role play. Bear in in mind the fact that most on-line courses are not especially media rich and many do not feature audio or video-led content at all.

Whilst a CD-ROM based product would be appreciably more media rich and hence realistic, learners will still face the significant challenge of developing and assessing complex interpersonal skills whilst sitting alone with a machine.

In order to ensure an adequate level of genuine competence, some kind of face-to-face component to your training intervention will also be required.

I would therefore recommend a blended approach. This would require a certain amount of self-paced pre-course work culminating in a series of tests. A pass score in these tests would then become the pre-requisite for attending some form of short local classroom event focussed purely on skills practice, development and assessment.

    I hope this helps.

  3. Could phone based learning be an option?
    Hi Natasha

Could phone based learning be an option? Your employees could gain the benefit of interactive group and 1:1 work without necessairly having to leave the workplace or master online resources. Crucially they would get to learn what it is like to coach and be coached live with direct feedback from facilitators and coachees.

This approach could be complmented by online resources and face to face support.

To find out more simply drop me an e-mail and I’ll give you more information.

    All the best
