I'd like to learn more about e-learning design....ideally to a point where ultimately I can produce e-learning myself.
Can anyone direct me to a source of (free) e-learning that might fit the bill?

A few sources
Hi Rus, I'd suggest the following:
Elearning network – http://www.elearningnetwork.org/
A good network of people and resources
Lynda – http://www.lynda.com/
High quality content
Tom Kuhlmann – http://www.articulate.com/rapid-elearning/
Good blog and community resources
Learning Pool – https://www.learningpool.com/home
A good supplier
One of the issues is that it's very platform specific – the ELN is a good place to start to check the lay of the land. Lynda will give offer some good fundamental design tips. The Articulate and LP site will show you a couple of alternative platform options.
thanks Andrew
