Exercises re personal space and sexual harrassment
Barbara, are these exercises of any use?
Exercise 1 (do this if you are female)
You are a woman waiting for a lift to take you to the top of a building in a hurry. The lift doors open on the ground floor where you are waiting. The lift is almost full of men, and none of them gets out. You will have to squeeze your way in.
A Would you rather wait until the lift returns?
B If you go in, how will you position yourself in the lift and why?
C How will you feel in this situation, and why?
Exercise 2 (do this if you are male)
You are a young man who takes the last seat on a crowded bus, next to a young lady unknown to you. As the bus keeps stopping more and more people get off. There are many empty seats around and only two people are left, sitting alone several seats from you.
A Would you be tempted to move to another seat?
B If not, will it make this lady anxious?
C Why should you move? You have not done anything wrong.
Get individual feedback and then encourage group discussion on the different reactions and perceptions.
