Creative Learning Media have created a free, and easy to use on-line food safety induction course for food handlers.

The home page features comprehensive instructions on how to use the course, and system requirements. It also shows an overview of the course content and details of how to use the course.

The course itself is colourful, logical and simple to understand. It provides good basic knowledge for new food handlers, and is a good refresher course for existing food staff. However, the simple language and content may not appeal to older staff.

The package is straightforward, and covers most aspects of food hygiene, contamination and cleaning. The content is comprehensive and the package is easy to use, with a noise which indicates when to press the continue key to the next section. However, it takes a long time to download the knowledge in the next section. During and at the end of the course, knowledge is checked through an exercise and assessment. The assessment uses random questions to check different areas of knowledge, and if questions are answered wrong on two occasions, the user is taken back to the relevant section to check their knowledge. The only disadvantage to this, is that the user will then need to continue to the assessment page, by pressing the forward key, and will need to complete the assessment again.

Overall, the package is a good basic on-line course, although does not cover all areas of food hygiene, such as legislation. I would however recommend this course for new employees within the food industry to gain a greater understanding of food safety.
