Free PC Literacy Tool?

Assess Windows and mouse skills with a self-administered PC literacy tool that runs from floppy disk without internet access. This forum post discusses finding suitable simulation or testing software for evaluating computer familiarity across distributed user populations.

I need to assess familiarity and fluency with Windows/Mouse etc for a large user population across the country. They won’t necessarily have web access so a web tool isn’t a solution. What I need is a small simulation or test that can be sent out on floppy and self-administered.
Has anybody seen anything like this?

Thanks!

  1. Maybe within Windows itself
Windows 95 had a little simulation called “tour.exe” that covered basic keyboard, mouse and file management skills.

In Windows 98 this was called “discover.exe”. It is on the Win98 CD in a sub-folder called “win98/tour”. It probably gets installed when you install Windows 98, but it works from the CD too.

Both perhaps too basic for your needs, and not really a “test”.

I can’t find an equivalent in Windows 2000 or above, and I couldn’t find anything on the Microsoft website.

You could have a look at http://www.simtel.net/pub/pd/57192.html. I didn’t like it much.

Please contact me if you need more help … but it wouldn’t necessarily be free.
