is this the same thing?
Michelle
I’ve not heard of the name “future alternatives mapping” but I often use a tool called “Downstream Impact Analysis”. This is a planning tool that looks at what might be the later impact on differnet stakeholders or parts of a process if you change something. I usually use a two fold method;firstly reversing the 5 M’s of cause and effect on a fishbone diagram to investigate those areas, then brainstorming the stakeholders and doing the same for/with them
I hope that helps…if you want to know more feel free to call on 07812 170391
another alternative
Michelle,
You might like to have a look at the “Future-Basing” process developed by Bill Phillips. It has previously been referred to as “Future mapping”

Not sure what you are looking for exactly, but if you email me just a little more detail on what you’re trying to achieve, I may have tools and techniques that may help.
(PS: used to work with a Michelle Rafferty, if you recognise my name, it may be we’ve “re-united”! if not , still get in touch!)
Also called scenario planning?
I think you are referring to Scenario planning. See:

Use google to find lots of information.
