The latest in a monthly series of updates on learning-related government initiatives.
23 April: Lifelong Learning Minister Malcolm Wicks has announced 19 new Union Learning Fund projects aimed at helping trades unions promote learning at work. The projects include an initative by rail union ASLEF to develop a learning representative network, funds for general union GMB to raise awareness of ICT for learning and a plan by the engineering and electrical union to support learning for those facing redundancy. The Fund, which was recently extended to 2004, is in its fourth year and already supports well over 200 projects in England.
10 April: Trainee teachers of construction, hospitality, and other trade skills will be eligible for £6,000 training salaries, Lifelong Learning Minister Malcolm Wicks announced today.
9 April: Education and Employment Secretary David Blunkett announces that Further Education and sixth form college teachers are to benefit from an extra £65 million pay settlement this year, rising to £135m in 2003-04 and the new Learning and Skills Council will have a five per cent funding boost in 2003-04.
