A recent conversation lead to my prospect asking the question 'How many points does this course attract under Hays Banding?' Is this a new technique, where do I find more information?

You want to be careful, though
Companies like Hays have a reputatation for being called in only after the company is in a mess (not Hays’ fault). And they can make things worse if they’re not used sensibly.
I can think of one company that discovered that it was paying employees too little for the tasks they were performing. So….they lowered the employees’ job titles! (Also, not Hays’ fault.)
Hays or Hay
Be careful> Hay is a consultancy responsible for the Hay Guide Chart and Profile Method of job evaluation. “Hays”, with the “s” is an Office Services company. “Hays Banding” I have never heard of, except possibly in a pay context.
