As part of our feature on trainer development, we asked TrainingZONE members to tell us a bit about how they came to be involved in the training profession, and offer some thoughts on what it means to be a trainer today. We received a fantastic selection of responses, which will be published throughout the month. Here, Kevin Chamberlain, a training provider responds.
- What's your current job role? Sole trader - Creative individual and organisational development.
- What did you do before this job? Head of Training.
- Describe your route into training Teaching, then always being given training responsibilities in differing organisations.; eventually it dawned on me that this is what I was meant to do!
- Did you always want to work in training and development? Yes, but I was too dumb to recognise it for a while.
- What would you say has been the most significant event in your career to date? Attending a leadership course run by Will Parfit.
- How do you think the role of the trainer has changed since you began your training career? Has it? It may be that there is some recognition by some employers that really first class facilitation skills are vital in a trainer.
- What single thing would improve your working life? More time to read, and somebody who can look inside my head and keep my website refreshed accordingly.
- What's your favourite part of the TrainingZONE site? CareerZone - it has worked for me in getting freelance work.
- Do you have any advice for those looking to embark on a career in training? Believe in yourself, never stop listening, watching, reading, reflecting and developing.
- What do you think are the biggest challenges facing the trainer today? Too many charlatans.
