Learning at work???
How contraversial do you want to be. How about stating; “It isn’t happening” and cite the CMI figures (don’t quote me on this) 78% of ‘managers’ are not qualified to do their jobs. As a managment development trainer I would even go to say that these figures are conservative.
Before anyone crucifies me for this; – I did say qualified, I did not say competent. Just remember the Peter Principle, “a person gets promoted to a level of their incompetence”. This is indicative of learning in the workplace not happening.
Light blue touch paper and retire:)
Regards.
Peter
I Agree…
Thanks Peter for the feedback…I can understand what you are saying. Although the purpose of my article is to Promote Learning at Work and to intimate to employees that indeed the nature and mediums for training is changing (esp E-Learning etc.).
Lets be positive 🙂
As a way of promoting learning how about using the metaphor or the brain as a muscle. If it doesnt get exercised it will become unfit.
For the educated members of staff, suggest to them that their knowledge has a rather short half-life. I graduated with a BSc honors in 2000 knowing that half of what I learnt would be obsolete within 2 years. If I don’t continue to learn at work then I will become a liability.
I hope that is more positive. As an aside; as an IIP recognised organisation (Fairlawn) and a registered IIP practitioner I do believe in the positive aspects workplace learning.
Best regards.
Peter.
