View from the HR Zone
=====================
This week two cases have been publicised where ordinary people
have been subjected to extraordinary stress causing illness and
long-term difficulties. In the first, a deputy headmaster
contacted a bullying helpline because of the behaviour of his head
teacher. He was diagnosed with stress and depression, and sacked
for being unfit to work. In the second, a bank financial adviser
received psychiatric treatment after being given sales targets to
achieve on top of his normal workload.

What strikes me in these sort of cases, is that management seldom
works for the interest of the victim. Management often works to
support the organisation and to reduce the risk of claims against
it. By protecting the organisation, it can fail to protect the
injured victim.

Despite compensation payments the victims' lives are still
blighted by the prospect of unemployment, by a lack of confidence,
by low esteem and by knowing that they have been victimised whilst
inevitably those who caused this suffering remain in post.
Payments in these cases are not lottery wins. Compensation is not
a band-aid for bullying. It doesn't make everything better.
