IBM has announced the industry's first capacity on demand capability for both disk and tape storage systems, allowing customers to increase their existing storage capacity by the equivalent of nearly 1,000,000 novels - in under five seconds.

IBM acquires OpenOrders, strengthening B2B
IBM has acquired OpenOrders Inc., a provider of enterprise-scale order management and fulfillment software for e-commerce. The acquistion expands IBM's leadership in business-to-business e-commerce software.
23 October - @server appliances
IBM introduces family of @server appliances. IBM has announced a new line of appliances, including the industry's most powerful Intel-based Linux and Windows Web-hosting appliance servers, staking claim to the $11 billion server appliance market, as projected by IDC through 2004.
20 October - Bell Helicopters
Bell Helicopter Textron has named IBM as its sole desktop PC provider - replacing existing Dell and Compaq systems. The six-year, $70 million agreement also calls for IBM to provide services, software and financing.
18 October - Casino dispensing machine
IBM has a new Automated Jackpot Dispensing System for the gaming industry that gives large-sum slot machine winners quick access to their cash and allows casinos to redeploy payout personnel to other customer service areas.
