Impact of economic turbulence considered

The impact of economic turbulence comes under the spotlight at this year's CIPD annual conference and exhibition, which will be held at the Harrogate International Centre from 16-18 September.

With the Office of National Statistics (ONS) report in July showing the slowest quarterly growth since 2005, the signs point towards a difficult period ahead for UK organisations.

The recent quarterly CIPD/KPMG Labour Market Outlook (LMO) warned that a further deterioration of the economy could result in employers being forced to dramatically cut down on staff, the outcome of which would be an avalanche of job losses.

The CIPD conference aims to help business people deal with the potential crisis and includes:

  • A panel session with the CIPD's chief economist, John Philpott and Stephen Timms, minister for employment and welfare reform. The session is to be chaired by David Smith, economics editor of the Sunday Times, and is to focus on the overarching theme of the state of the global economy and its impact on the UK's labour market.

  • Leadership and employee engagement

  • Developing cultures that enhance employee output

  • Performance management.
