Which profile tool do you use? DiSC or Whole Brain thinking?

Hi All

I am currently looking into the options of different profiling tools that can be used to assist leaders in becoming more aware of their individual style and to be more flexible in their leadership.

The company I work for has used DiSC profiling (behaviour) in the past. I have experience in using the Neethling Brain Instrument (NBI - thinking styles). I find that the NBI is easier to learn, recall and apply due to its colour based approach rather than acronyms. I am aslo open to healthy debate ;)

I am wanting to know what your experience is with using either or both.

  1. Insights

    We’re currently using Insights Discovery, which is also colour based (Jungian) across our leadership group (150-ish people on one main site and some homeworkers) who have given us some great feedback about their new insight into their leadership style.

  2. iLead profiling tool

    Hi I’m working with a profiling tool that comes from France originally. It has had great success there and my wife, who has set herself up in business in the UK bases her leadership coaching and consultancy on this model. It is from the Jung school, but is based on interactions and what we learn from them.

    The tool talks about different engines, and stoppers; the engines drive you to act, and the stoppers are to be recognised, understood and worked with/around. 

    Hilary chose to work with this because she found it to be simple to understand, gain benefit from and extremely effective when working with people in workshops that tackle their actual business issues.

    Hi Brendon

    I’m familar with both of the assesements that you have quoted. I’ve been assessed presonally using both as well as having used both in coaching scenarios with clients. I’m also famialr with Insights, again having undertaken this assessment and used it in training and coaching with clients, dating back from 5 years ago. Although all of these assesments have their particualr focus and specific uses, I don’t belive that any of the 3 is specifically focused upon Leadership, so I have to be somewhat pediantic and ask you what you mean by "leadership style"? and " to be more flexible in their leadership style"? becuase unless I was to know more in-depth sepcifics about what you are trying to measure, how you are attempting to utilise the reported data and in particualr what comprehensively, you want to achive then I would find it difficlt to provide a specific answer. The term "leadership style" can mean almost anything to anyone, it’s fairly general!

    However a couple of pieces of general information as follows – 

    1)   If you are trying to measure leadership capabilities aginst the elements of a leadership competency matrix, to discover your ‘subjects’ strengths, weaknesses, gaps and development needs, etc then I would check out the Discovery Learning Inc. website (http://www.discoverylearning.com) for the Dension Leadeship Development Survey and the Discovery Leadership Profile – both leadership based, very comprehensive and based upon very robust and well validated leadership competency models.   

    2)   The other general piece of advice, I would give you is to get hold of a MIT Slaone Management Review article / document titled "Versatile Leadership" by Robert E. Kaplan and Robert B. Kaiser (both the publication and these 2 authors are well known and well respected in the ‘leadership development field’). Its a little old, but well researched, informative, even fairly practical and presents a duality / quadrant based ‘leadership style’ model and offers advice for developing versatility in the 4 different styles of leadership within their model. It would seem to suit your 2 general themes of ‘leadership’ and ‘developeing flexibility’ – they term it versatility. MIT Sloane publication’s article is ‘Volume 44 No. 4’ and you could get it from their website http://www.mit-smr.com. I’d send you a copy, but its copyrighted.

  4. More information on ‘Leadership Style’

    Hi William,

    You raise a good point that I need to clarify with the powers that be. Whole Brain Thinking allows a specific questionaire based on leadership as well as a ‘general profile’.

    It all goes back to knowing your purpose and what we want to achieve.

    I am interested in where you learnt about NBI thinking styles? Are you still using NBI at your place of work?
