Does anyone have any practical exercises/role plays that can be incorporated into a Team Leader training session on Leadership & Direction.
In particular, I'd like to focus on the following:
- creating a sense of direction and purpose
- focusing team members on goals to be achieved
- adapting leadership styles to different individuals/situations.
If anyone has any material they could suggest I'd be very grateful.
Many thanks
Lucy

You may find the video Teams that work useful as a stimulus resource with notes and guidance on its use. It contains case studies of seven teams in a variety of different settings – go to http://www.teamsthatwork.co.uk
Although it doesn’t have any activities in it, my book Team Leading, published this year by the ILM (www.i-l-m.com) is all about the role and skills that team leaders need and how they can develop them. You may find it useful in thinking through the issues or even want to buy copies for your trainees! I am working on a trainers workbook to go with it but that won’t be available until later this year, I’m afraid.

Leadership – practical exercise
Prior to event, ask all participants to send you their ‘short list’ top six ideas of what they consider, in their experience, to be the tactics used by successful people.
Incorporate best ideas into your own ‘long list’ list (with help from management texts).
Ask syndicate groups to consider and agree their top six from the ‘long list’ – in order of importance – and explain why, to plenary. Presentation can be as if at employee development day – with various roles / each idea presented by different person.
Ask plenary to combine main points and devise check list for delegates to refer to and use. Delegates to review achievements against check list, prior to annual assessment.
Vision of Teams
Hello Lucy,
Although not an exercise or role play, I represent a company that has produced an excellent training video that highlights and examines exactly what you are looking for.
The programmes is called ”Vision of Teams” and is a case study based on the real life story of Ann Bancroft, the leader of the first all female expedition to ski across Antarctica to the South Pole.
As well as examining the areas you have highlighted it also works well as a motivational piece.
If you are interested I would be more than happy to supply you with more details or a copy of the programme to look at.

Whatever you do, at all costs avoid getting sucked into the kind of toe-curling awfulness reported here:
