Mobile training solutions – lessons learnt

default-16x9

A proposed mobile training solution put forward to me includes a Trainer to be mobile, with a vehicle, carrying 9 laptops to create a wireless LAN that can be set up and deliver training to students using appropriate facilities.

Has anyone been here before?
General experiences wanted.

  1. Issues
The major issues are security of the computers and likely theft. Also the fact that computers being continually moved around tend to have a shorter life span. It is a good idea to have proper keyboards for the user and plenty of extention leads.

The only other real issue is always have one spare laptop.

  2. Mobile in action
We began offering training using mobile kit a year or so ago. We now have two ready-configured systems, each in its own ‘flight case’ colloquially referred to as a coffin because of its size and shape. This contains eight laptops, a ruggedised UNIX server, a network hub, and all necessary cables, plus a space for a box of A4 training handouts.
This is shipped independently of the trainer, and can go anywhere in the world (remember to include a/c plug adaptors!). The trainer travels independently with their own laptop. The customer is obliged to provide or hire-in an SVGA projector. Set-up time on arrival is about 1 hour.
This is a successful solution because we are careful to ensure that the logistics work well, and there are people and check-lists in place to test and check everything when the kit returns. We are also very clear in setting terms and conditions, charging the customer for the use and transport of the equipment, making the customer responsible for insurance whilst it is on their premises etc.

    Good Luck!
