My MOOC has a mobile angle too

default-16x9

This is my third post about a MOOC on Data Science that I'm cureently taking at Coursera, one of the top three MOOC providers. My last post focused on the social learning aspect of the MOOC. The MOOC also has a mobile learning aspect too. Coursera recently released a mobile app which can be downloaded to both Android and iOS platforms. Having used the app I can say that it replicates the video lectures on the website. So I can go around during the day listening to lectures and then later log on to a computer to do some more hands-on work. I find that really useful. But the app does more than just allowing you to listen to video lectures. It will show you a list of courses you have registered for and also allow you to search for other courses. It's quite simple but effective at the same time. The learning content is not too much that you can't consume it via a mobile interface, and this shows that simple apps can be used to create mobile learning even within organisations.

Just this morning I was reading an article from TechInAsia (http://www.techinasia.com/coursera-picks-steam-china-students-moocs-mobile/) that China has become Coursera's fastest growing market because of the mobile app. Learners in China download the Android app more than any other country, they are also the number two country in terms of iOS app downloads.

So I'm starting my second course in the MOOC, which is R Programming. Rumours have it that it's a really tough one and people do drop out of it. Please wish me luck. I will keep you updated about my progress and what I'm learning about MOOCs in general.
