Director of Education and Lifelong Learning at Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Stephen Munby, is set to become the new Chief Executive of the National College for School Leadership (NCSL).
The NCSL provides professional and practical support for England’s existing and aspiring school leaders.
Mr Munby started his career as a teacher in Birmingham in the late 1970s before becoming a lecturer in Education at Sunderland Polytechnic.
He also worked as a consultant to the Records of Achievement INSET Group carrying out consultancy and training on assessment and records of achievement in nine LEAs in the North East of England.
He then moved to Oldham LEA and Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council before taking his current role at Knowsley in 2000, where his work has been widely commended.
Welcoming the appointment Education Secretary Ruth Kelly said: “Stephen Munby… has a strong track record of achievement and leadership and I am sure he will have the determination, ability and skills to succeed in this role. His experience will be invaluable in helping the College meet the important challenges that lie ahead.”
Mr Munby will replace Heather Du Quesnay who is standing down after nearly five years as chief executive. He will take up his post in March.
