Not that straight forward
Dear Alison,
I would like to offer a few comments on this research that you are currently undertaking. From the heading I have assumed that you may need the opportunity to learn more about the NVQ process. NVQs and Exams are not interchangable alternatives to each other. NVQs are not specific training programs but Industry defined standards of minimum workplace performance written in measurable terms. Achievement of an NVQ or an NVQ unit demonstrates that a current or potential employee ‘CAN DO’ a particular task to the Industry standard. In bottom line terms a manager can delegate the task to the employee and should be able to trust that it will be carried out competently and to quality standards. Vocational training programs have been devised to meet the needs of a learner based on the NVQ content. The learning should be monitored on an individual basis and incorporates either on the job training or college based training.
Exams have been designed to suit a particular industry usually by Educational based processes and when the learner passes the exam the employer knows that the learner can describe in words what they think should be done and in some cases they may only know 60% of what is required.
MA and NT are programs devised to assist employers to have a susidised route for training and development of young new employees into their industry and in my personal experience employers have rejected this approach for a number of variables other than the method of measuring the ability of the young person.
Please feel free to email me. I hope this is of help

Please contact me about SVQ vs ‘Exams’ as training technique and transferability. Also about difficulty of attaining status to deliver SVQ/NVQ.
