Nelson Mandela has become the first person to be awarded an honorary degree this year by the Open University.
The ex-South African president received his honorary Doctor of Laws at his home in Cape Town.
OU Vice-Chancellor Brenda Gourley said: "Through all the years of his life, Nelson Mandela has recognised the importance of education.
"He once said that education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world and he fought wherever he could for the empowerment of people through education.
"The Open University was founded on the principles of social justice, equality and opportunity. Nelson Mandela's work and life embodies these qualities.
"His tireless efforts in fighting racism, hatred and discrimination are unrivalled."
