pay as you drive

The government is currently considering pay as you drive charges with varied rated depending on the roads used.

Anyone got any opinions as to how this is going to effect mileage claims for those of us who drive several thousand miles a year; be we employed or eslf employed, staff or external consultants?

    I live in Central London, I dont possess a car becasue 1. Its so easy to get anywhere on public transport 2. The Govnt and Council have planning policies which discourage car use and encourage public transport use.

    I’ve lost count of the number of freelance employers who expect me to have a car and even if I had one absolutely expect me to use it for work. I’ve lost several jobs because I dont possess a car.

    Its here, its right now and its biting, the rest of the country is only slowly waking up!

    your circumstances probably reflect a large proportion of our policy makers in this country….
    however
    I live in a village in Hampshire, the nearest shop is over a mile away, the round trip for my two sons to get to college is 14 miles, my clients range from central London to out of town business parks where, to get there for a 9.00 start, I would require to travel the day before if I was to take public transport.
    (I also have an 80 year old arthritic mother in law in the house who cannot walk further than the drive without sitting down, but that isn’t the point)
    There are other ways of regulating car use without going to the lengths of pay as you drive road tolls, my point is that this particular method creates huge complexities downstream for things such as trainer expenses.

  3. Central London living isn’t representational…
    of most of this country…currently travel a 70 mile round trip to my office, which takes 1 hour. If I were to use public transport I would mean 2 trains, a tram and a bus!!! and take me over double the time. Not to mention how I would carry a laptop, work I have from home, training equipment etc etc. I have travelled round trip 140 each day. Working patterns have dramtically changed, we don’t all work on our doorstep, especially when your area of expertise is Training & Development or HR!! Whist I do my bit for the environment recycling and being as energy efficient as possible, until there is a job on my doorstep or radically improved public transport I will continue to use my car and oppose this ‘stupid’ idea.
