Personal Values

default-16x9

Can anyone point me in the direction of a short exercise or case study that can 'expose' personal values?

This would be followed by a facilitated review and some co-coaching. The final step would be comparing these personal values with company values and exploring the leadership implimentations.

Something business related would be ideal but any thing that works would be great (pragmatist!)

thanks.

  1. values exercise

    Hi Mike

Your question puts me in mind of the old exercise of 6 people on a nosediving plane and only 5 paracutes, who would get the paracutes and why?  You tailor the exercise by selecting the famous six people though a spectrum to suit your purpose, for example in leadership one end of the spectrum may be Nelson Mandella or Churchill.  The groups discuss who gets the paracutes and why for about 10 = 15 minutes and then present their decisions to the whole group, this can then lead to a full discussion.

A variation of this is 6 professions for example Nurse; Firefighter, Banker etc; list in priority order who deserves pay increases, why and at what % when there is only a certain pot of money.

    Hope this helps

  2. Core Qualities

Here are a couple of web site addresses which provide an insight into undertaking  a Core Qualities analysis. It’s an interesting exercise and can if done properly unearth some interesting insights.

And an alternate system that might also be useful to look at, though I have never used it so can’t vouch for it, Personal Values Exercise:

  3. Values Exercise Resource

Mike ~ You may want to join up with the ASTD National group on LinkedIn and seek out one of the members, a woman called Lauren LaPorte.  She was gracious enough to share with me an exercise on personal values that she had developed and it may work beautifully for the purpose you describe.  (I’m sure you’ll understand that because it’s copyrighted material, I’m not comfortable forwarding it on or posting it here.)

  4. Values Exercise

Thank you all for your suggestions which are much appreciated.

I am currently developing an idea based around newspapers. The group will be given a selection of the days papers and invited to chose a story and discuss it (total time 30 mins). The debate about which story and the content of the discussion should, i hope expose some personal values which I hope will be apparent to the individual and/or others.

We will then review this inviting sharing of feedback about what people noticed in themselves and others.

Thanks again and any other wisom gladly received.

    Mike.
