make it real!
Hi Nigel
A problem with ready-made role plays can be that some delegates don’t see the relevance of the situations to their role in their organisation. This is particularly true of those with a pragmatist learning style (which is more common in some industries and professions than in others).
One way that I have overcome this it to use “real” examples from within the organisation – You can base it on the standard structure of a generic role play – but complete the actual role play information with the aid of a manager/HR representative who was familiar with the situation(s).
An alternative method, which will make the role plays more directly relevant to the learners, and so increase their learning, is to ask delegtaes to put forward scenarios that they are having to (or have had to) deal with in the workplace. This method also gives learners the chance to learn from peers about how to deal with a particular situation – whch is a particularly powerful form of learning for adults (known as socio-constructivism). It will also help to ensure that those situations are dealt with in the most effective manner by delegates when they return to work.
I think I’ve got a template for requesting the information from delegates for the latter exercise – let me know if you’d like a copy.
Good luck!
