The brave new world of responsive email

It's been a significant year for smartphone usage. The last 12 months have seen our mobile traffic double, and because of this and the predicted trends for the next couple of years, we're making a few changes.

Here are some stats in infographic form that go further in explaining the importance of mobile both now and in the future.



On the new platform we're using, our sites are built using responsive design. The simplest way to explain this is to open TrainingZone.co.uk in a desktop browser, then grab a corner of the browser and see what happens when you resize it. Clever hey?

Well, now the same principle is being applied to our bulletins. Responsive design offers members the same version of TrainingZone whatever device they choose to access it on.

Seeing as we have recently given the website a makeover, we thought we'd do the same to our email bulletins too. We send thousands of emails per month and we're always looking to make them as interesting and engaging as possible through the content, but thanks to these recent tech developments in the industry there's also plenty we can do with email delivery itself as well.

Here's MyCustomer.com's editor Neil Davey:

"All the good work that is done to ensure that emails render flawlessly on the desktop doesn’t take into account the growing number of users trying to read the emails on a mobile device. When you view these emails on a smartphone, for instance, users will see a zoomed out view of the email, usually at 50%, making the text very difficult to read at half the size. Definitely not an effective way to communicate and engage with your mailing list."
